The group of Desert and Environmental Change mainly focused on desert, desertification and paleoenvironmental change in the arid and semi-arid regions of northern China.

The aim of the group is to capture both low-frequency and high-frequency climate variability from desert and lacustrine sediment in northern China. Group members have published over 400 papers in international journals, authoritative books and in proceedings of scientific conferences.
