Chinese Geophysical Society

The Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS) is a world-class organization founded by the Chinese Association of Science and Technology (CAST). It was founded in Shanghai in 1947, before moving its base to Beijing in 1954. At present, it has a total of 14700 registered members, including 56 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, with the members coming from 22 systems, and 1622 institutes, universities, industrial companies and government departments. The CGS has 14 special committees, 6 commissions, and 5 scientific journals.  

Geophysics is a science that performs research on the genesis, formation, evolution, structure, and composition of Earth by means of physical methods, which includes celestial geophysics, atmospheric geophysics, solid geophysics and marine geophysics. Geophysics plays a very important role in the construction and development of the national economy and human survival, as well as life, through energy exploration, resource reconnaissance, mineral production, environmental detection and protection, disaster prevention and control, and engineering construction. It can bring benefit to mankind through developing modern science based on the observations, and properties and attributes of Earth. 

CGS was the main reformative unit of Chinese Association of Science and Technology in the 1980s. The CGS is now sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Ministry of Land and Resources China (MLRC), China Earthquake Administration (CEA), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC), China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China National Administration Coal Geology (CNACG).  

 

Chinese Association for Quaternary Research

As the latest geological period in the history, the Quaternary is an important period for human emergence and the gradual formation of Earth’s modern environments. An important feature of the Quaternary environment was the large-scale cold/warm fluctuations of Earth’s climate. Especially during the cold periods, when sea level showed a significant decline, massive ice sheets and/or glacial activity occurred in Earth’s polar oceans, high-latitude landmasses and mountains at various latitudes. During the warm periods, due to the massive melting of ice sheets, the sea level rose. Accompanied by these massive climate changes, the ecological environment and biosphere changed. Human emergence is an important event in the Quaternary period. The environmental conditions of human emergence and the development of human civilization (i.e., the impacts of human activities on the natural evolution of Earth’s environment) are also attracting more attention. Quaternary research makes use of modern scientific techniques, based on a variety of records of environmental change recorded in geological materials to recover the evolutionary history of Earth's environment over the past few million years. Through these recordings we can explore the reasons for these changes, understand the impacts of Earth’s natural evolutionary behavior on the environment and human activities, and predict future trends in environmental evolution.

Quaternary science research work is a multi-disciplinary comprehensive study, which involves Earth sciences, biological sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry and the humanities. The foundation of the Chinese Association for Quaternary Research aims to coordinate domestic research efforts, organize various experts, carry out joint research and make innovations in Quaternary research.

The Chinese Association for Quaternary Research was approved for establishment by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in early 1957. For over 50 years, this Association accomplished much in the organization and coordination of Chinese forces carrying out research as well as domestic and international academic exchanges. In 1982, the International Union for Quaternary Research accepted China as a member and the Chinese Association for Quaternary Research was called on to participate in activities on behalf of China. Numerous Quaternary scientific research results have been achieved in China. Quaternary scientific research has become a discipline of Earth Sciences with a degree of influence in the world and the Chinese Association for Quaternary Research has also made contributions.

Outstanding personnel are gathered together in the Chinese Association for Quaternary Research. This includes 46 academicians (45 academicians at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 1 academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering). In addition to outstanding established scientists, there are also dozens of young scholars from the Yangtze River Scholars, 100-Talent Program and Outstanding Youth Fund.

 

Engineering Geology Committee

The Geological Society of China established the Engineering Geology Committee at the end of 1978 and the Institute of Geology, Chinese Academy of Science was commissioned as the attached unit of the Engineering Geology Committee (No. 018 Document of Geological Society of China). Following this, from November 1 to November 10, 1979, the first National Academic Conference on Engineering Geology was held at the Suzhou Lumen Hotel. During the Conference, the first session of the Engineering Geology Committee was established on November 6, officially declaring the establishment of the Engineering Geology Committee, Geological Society of China.

At the establishment of the Engineering Geology Committee, the Commission Constitution was developed. The mission of the Engineering Geology Committee was proposed, namely, to unite engineering geologists, conduct academic exchanges, make efforts to improve academic levels, and promote the development of Chinese engineering geology. Its key tasks are: (1) to develop plans of professional and academic activities, provide advice on science and technology development for the authorities and run academic journals; (2) to organize academic activities and events for the exchange of experience, as well as promote the development of research and teaching; (3) to actively organize and participate in international academic activities; (4) to understand and provide dynamic academic standards and development directions for domestic and international science and technology through the organization and participation in international academic activities and other international exchanges; (5) to undertake the work assigned by the Geological Society of China. The Committee will follow the above missions, playing an important role in the development of the engineering geology discipline.

Chinese Journal of Geology

The Chinese Journal of Geology is a quarterly journal that began in 1958. The prime focus of the Chinese Journal of Geology is original research and reviews in the fields of geosciences, which includes structural geology, tectonophysics, stratigraphy and paleontology, petroleum geology, petrology, mineral and ore deposits, geochemistry, and geochronology. The Chinese Journal of Geology specifically encourages submission of papers based on the integration of a multitude of geophysical, geological, geochemical, geodynamic, and geotectonic methods. The Chinese Journal of Geology aims to be a major forum for those who work in academic and educational organizations related to Earth sciences.

 

Chinese Journal Of Geophysics 

The Chinese Journal of Geophysics has been published since 1948. It is a comprehensive academic journal on geophysics cosponsored by the Chinese Geophysical Society (CGS) and the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Issues of the journals include articles on solid and applied geophysics, space and atmospheric physics, ocean physics, and related fields. The Editor-in-Chief of the journal is Liu Guang-Ding.

The Chinese Journal of Geophysics is published monthly in both print and electronic formats. It is indexed by the Science Citation Index-Expanded, the Engineering Index, Petroleum Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Cambridge-Scientific-Abstracts, Abstract Journal, VINITI, INSPEC, JST, Scopus, and GeoBase.

 

   

Journal of Engineering Geology

The Journal of Engineering Geology is a comprehensive academic publication on engineering geosciences in China. It was approved to be established in 1993 as a quarterly review, and to be distributed both at home and abroad. A normal issue contains 112 pages on a format of A4 paper.

The major objective of the journal is to promote scientific exchanges between geoscientists and engineers in developing theories, technologies, and applications of engineering geosciences to meet the needs of construction and development of the national economy. The journal emphasizes the integration of theoretical development and engineering practice, so that engineering geology disciplines can better serve the national economic plans for tackling major geological and geoenvironmental problems. Theoretical advancement and methodological innovation are key topic for the journal. Discussions that explore new methods, techniques and experiences focused on civil, hydropower, railway, highway and mining construction, urban and rural planning, geoenvironmental and geohazard management, as well as energy and industrial exploitation are also a key part of the Journal of Engineering Geology. The journal is appropriate as reference for scientific researchers, university teaching staff and students, as well as professional engineers and technicians.

The Journal of Engineering Geology is published by the Institute of Geology and Geophysics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and edited by the Key Laboratory of Engineering Geomechanics, CAS in collaboration with the National Committee for Engineering Geology of the Geological Society of China and the National Group for the International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). Professor Wang Sijing, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Vice-President of IAEG, heads the editorial board. The board also includes a number of senior geologists and engineers well known within China and abroad.

 

 

 

 

Progress in Geophysics

Progress in Geophysics is a bimonthly journal that was founded in 1986 and is under the charge of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS). Progress in Geophysics is jointly sponsored by the IGGCAS and the Chinese Geophysical Society and it covers geophysics and related fields.

The main goal of the journal is to report the latest progress in the study of geophysics at home and abroad, discuss the development strategy for geophysics, evaluate current and developing trends in geophysical research, publish innovative or significant research papers, monographs and reviews, and letters. This journal is printed as one of “the core journals” of Peking University, is a part of the group of journals represented by the China scientific and technical papers and citations database (CSTPCD) and China Science Citation Database (CSCD) core journals. Many of the published articles are included in important databases at home and abroad.

The journal covers geophysical development in China. Its topics include geophysical exploration of oil and gas reserves, atmospheric sciences, solid mineral resources exploration, environmental protection, engineering, national defense among other areas of research.

Quaternary Sciences was formerly known as China Quaternary Research, which was founded in 1958. In 1989, China Quaternary Research was renamed into Quaternary Sciences as a quarterly publication. In 1999, Quaternary Sciences was changed into a bimonthly publication and expanded into Big 16 paper size in 2004.
Over the last half century, under the guidance of previous chief editors and the editorial board, Quaternary Sciences has grown with the development of quaternary science research. The journal has a clear academic direction with published articles that focus on science, innovation, academia, and forward-looking thinking. With distinctive features and continuously improving quality, the journal has become a window to display quaternary science research, a platform to communicate quaternary research results, and a place to promote and disseminate the scientific spirit and quaternary science knowledge, which thus makes a significant contribution to the popularization and theoretical improvement of quaternary science.

Main Aims: The main aim of the journal is to reflect the development trends of quaternary and global change research, publish the latest achievements, and promote academic exchanges.

Mission: The journal covers quaternary-related Earth sciences, environmental science, humanities, and other disciplines. Its purpose is to implement the "double hundred" policy, carry out academic discussions and raise the basic and application levels of quaternary research.

Main Content: New theory and technological advances in quaternary research, quaternary sedimentation and strata, quaternary sedimentary environment and paleoclimate, development, utilization and management of quaternary natural resources, quaternary environmental engineering and application, evolution and the new discovery of quaternary plants and animals, correlation between global change and the human environment, astronomical cycles and climate evolution, quaternary neotectonic movement and geological events (including catastrophic events), and domestic and foreign quaternary research trends related to territorial management.
Quaternary Sciences is one of the representative journals in Earth science as a core journal of Chinese natural science. The Journal is catalogued by many well-known international search systems and domestic organizations, such as Chinese Science Citation Database, Chinese Academic Journal Network, Chinese Scientific Literature Database and China Digital Journal.
The influence factor and total citation frequency of the journal maintain a high level. According to Chinese Scientific Journal Citation Report (core version) (CJCR) and Chinese Sci-technical Periodicals for Statistics (CSTPC), published by the China Institute of Scientific and Technical Information, at the end of 2008, the total citation frequency of Quaternary Sciences was 2224, ranking No. 4, with an influence factor of 1.780, ranking No. 7 in the Earth sciences. Based on Annual Report on Comprehensive Citation of Chinese Academic Periodicals (CSCD) (2008 Edition), the total citation frequency of Quaternary Sciences is 1530 with an influence factor of 1.524.

Awards: According to the influence factor ranking of scientific journals in 1999, Quaternary Sciences won the award of Top 2 in December, 2000, the Second Award of excellent journals presented by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2000, and the Third Award of excellent journals presented by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007 and 2008. In the Notice of Scientific Journal List published by the Ministry of Science and Technology and forwarded by the Library and Information Commission of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001, Quaternary Sciences was listed in the "Double Hundred Scientific Journals". Quaternary Sciences was listed in Chinese Top Scientific Journals first released by the Institute of Science and Technology Information of China on December 9, 2008.
