Composition and Properties of Earth’s Deep Interior
Research Interests
· Early history of the Earth and composition of the Earth’s core

Using two-phase first-principles molecular dynamics method to obtain partitioning coefficients of elements between different phases and to study the early history of the Earth and the composition of the Earth’s core.

· Minerals, Melts and Volatiles in the Earth Mantle

To deal with the complex behaviors of multi-phases and multi-components in the earth’s interiors, we systematically combine the microscopic approaches (such as first principles simulations and molecular dynamics simulations) with the macroscopic thermodynamic modelings to provide new constraints for the compositions in the earth mantle.

· Physical properties of minerals and melts at high pressure high temperature

The behaviors of electrical conductivity of materials within Earth’s interior are investigated by impedance spectral method at high pressure and high temperature. The composition, electrical structure and cause of high conductivity zone are discussed.

· Numerical Simulation of Geodynamics on Rock Deformation and Magama Transportation in Lithosphere

Based on conservation equations of mass , momentum and energy as well as rhological constitutive relation, numerically simulating delamination process due to material abnormity in lithosphere and relevant magma and tectonic activities.

· Thermodynamic models of fluid in the Earth’s interior

Modeling thermodynamic properties of fluid in the Earth’s interior and making predictions of stable phases in the Earth’s interior with a basic thermodynamic criteria (Gibbs free energy optimization).

· Molecular processes related to the unconventional oil and gas resources

Using computer simulation to study the crucial molecular processes related to the unconventional oil and gas resources, for example, the nucleation mechanism of natural gas hydrates and the transportation mechanism of shale gas in nanopores.
