Construction of Regional Center for Large Equipment

In 2008, the Chinese Academy of Sciences established the Beijing Equipment Center for Earth Systems and Environmental Science. The founding of the center was spearheaded by the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, through collaboration with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, among others. The overall objectives of the center are to promote instrument resource construction and sharing, improve equipment utilization, establish the integrated experimental research platform of “analysis - observation research - experimental simulation” for the sustainable development of economic society, and enable research equipment to operate more effectively for the purpose of knowledge innovation, as well as national economic and social development.

The center has a network of shared equipment, which currently consists of 197 pieces of equipment, with a total value of nearly 300 million RMB. This includes 65 pieces of large-scale equipment, each of which is worth more than one million RMB. Since the approval of the center’s construction in late 2007, each institute has purchased a batch of advanced international equipment under the support of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which has greatly enhanced the experimental facilities of the center. In addition, technical and research personnel have collaborated toward the development and innovation of various technologies, which not only promote the integration of research and experimental observation technology and the comprehensive development of the laboratories, but also ensures a large number of innovative research achievements.
