Center for Oil-Gas Theories and Methods

Orientation:
The Center is dedicated on addressing the key theoretical and technical challenges impeding the advancement of oil and gas exploration and development in China. It engages in foundational, strategic, and cutting-edge innovative research including multi-sphere oil and gas enrichment theories, the development of key exploration equipment and frontier technology, and the integration of artificial intelligence and big data analysis into the exploration of oil and gas resources. By employing interdisciplinary approach that combines geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and geobiology, the Center investigates multi-sphere geological structures and oil and gas accumulation theories in key oil and gas resource enrichment regions of China and adjacent areas. Its work supports national strategic needs and contributes to economic and social development.

Research Directions:
The Center focuses on three main research directions: i) multi-sphere oil and gas enrichment theory, ii) geophysical exploration theory and cutting-edge technology, and iii) development of key geophysical equipment. In addition, the Center explores frontier research in fields such as big data modeling, AI-driven oil and gas analysis, and intelligent computing. The goal is to build a comprehensive big data and big model platform for oil and gas resources, characterized by multi-source, multi-scale, and multi-attribute features. This platform aims to provide big data analysis and practical application services for deep and ultra-deep hydrocarbon systems, oil and gas industry development, and new energy technologies.

Medium and Long-term Goals:
The Center has achieved significant breakthroughs in developing core geophysical equipment development, particularly in OBS, MEMS, and DAS, enabling China as a competitive player internationally. Substantial progress has also been made in geophysical exploration theories and frontier technologies, including precise simulation and migration imaging of seismic wave propagation in complex media, integrated geophysical joint inversion theories and algorithms for oil and gas, and multi-scale information fusion. These advancements enhance China's capabilities in deep and ultra-deep oil and gas exploration. Research on carbonate sedimentation, dolomitization, oil and gas geochemistry, and basin fluid-rock interactions has gained international recognition, leading to innovative contributions to key theories of oil and gas accumulation in China's terrestrial basins.

The Center future focus will be on multi-sphere oil and gas enrichment theory, the development of AI-based large models for oil and gas , advancements in sedimentology and hydrocarbon accumulation dynamics experimental systems, as well as integrated geophysical exploration and inversion research. It will also establish platforms for high-performance computing of vast data sets, geophysical equipment R&D testing, and comprehensive big data applications for oil-gas resources and geoscience research. These efforts will support national oil and gas strategic needs and contribute to socioeconomic development.
