Deep Earth Technology and Equipment Research Center

History:

Formerly known as "Research and Development Center of Advanced Technology and Equipment for Deep Resource Exploration" established in 2017, "Engineering Laboratory of Deep Earth Resource Equipment Technology" was approved by Chinese Academy of Sciences in September 2020 and "Deep Earth Technology and Equipment Research Center" was established in October 2024.

Orientation:

Facing the state's major needs of technical equipment of accurate exploration and efficient development of deep earth resources, the center should make the breakthrough on the core components and technologies, such as deep probe sensor, study and develop the geophysical exploration technology and equipment, efficient development technology and equipment of deep oil and gas and construct the collaborative innovation platform for deep earth exploration equipment, providing the methods, technologies and equipment support for deep resource exploration and development, earth and planetary science exploration.

Research Field:

The center will focus on the major strategic demands on the resource development and scientific exploration in the fields of deep earth, deep sea and deep space, be mainly engaged in "deep-earth precise exploration technology and equipment", "deep oil and gas efficient development technology and equipment", "deep space exploration scientific payload" and other major research orientations, lay out the key core techniques in sensors and special chips, study and develop the deep earth resources exploration and development technique and equipment, deep sea geophysical exploration technology equipment and deep space exploration science payload, support the exploration and development of oil gas, geothermal and mineral resources as well as promote the conversion and application of R&D achievements.

Talent Team:

The center has gathered the talents in Geophysics, Instrument Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Geological Engineering, Computer Technology and Software Engineering and a multidisciplinary collaborative innovation research team has been established. The center has 104 members, including 21 researchers/professorate senior engineers, 53 associate researchers/senior engineers and 30 engineers and assistant engineers. The outstanding talents include 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 7 selected candidates for the national talent program, 6 key technical talents in Chinese Academy of Science and 7 members of Youth Innovation Promotion Association CAS. 

The research team has made the breakthrough on several core techniques in deep resource exploration, such as MEMS sensor, and some independently developed detection equipment has reached the productization level. Wherein, the ground electromagnetic detection methods and equipment studied have been applied in the resource and energy, engineering and hydrogeological exploration successfully; the flux-gate magnetometer carried in "Tianwen 1" rover, the first mission to Mars, carried out the mobile magnetic field measurement on surface of Mars; the world's first "CT multi-field coupled rock mechanics test system of the high-energy accelerator" that was studied successfully provided the advanced scientific research equipment support for transformation and upgrading of shale oil and gas, natural gas hydrates and deep geothermal reservoirs; the center successfully studied the engineering prototype of "drilling-testing-transmission-control" integrated intelligent drilling guidance system, and nearly a hundred wells have been tested and applied in oil and gas fields such as Shengli, Northwest, Changqing and Southwest. 

The drill bits are guided into the optimal production sites in a horizontal well of Tarim Basin to obtain the high-yield industrial oil flow, which, as one of 20 achievements, was released in the 2023 Zhongguancun special session of major scientific and technological achievements. Relevant research achievements have won several science and technology awards, including The 22nd China Patent Gold Award, Second Prize of National S&T progress Award, Outstanding Scientific and Technological Achievement Award of Chinese Academy of Science, First Prize of China Geophysical Science and Technology Progress Award and First Prize of Science and Technology Award of Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering.

The center will focus on the aero-surface-ocean-well electromagnetic detection technology system, intelligent drilling guide technology equipment system, high-precision electromagnetic/seismic/geomagnetic detection sensor, high-temperature and high-pressure downhole sensor, deep-space magnetic field and seismic detection loads, seabed seismometers, reservoir sweet spot evaluation, deep drilling and reservoir modification, reservoir upgrading and environmental impact assessment, low-carbon energy metal mineral exploration and so on to support national major demands on national exploration and development of deep earth resources and deep space exploration and serve the economic and social development.
