On September 1, 2025, at the joint scientific assembly of the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) and the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI) held in Lisbon, Portugal, Associate Professor WANG Yibo of our institute was awarded the 2025 Edward A. Flinn–Pembroke J. Hart Award by the International Lithosphere Program (ILP). This prestigious award recognizes his innovative contributions to the study of heat flow and lithospheric thermal structure.

The Edward A. Flinn–Pembroke J. Hart Award is among the most distinguished honors in international solid Earth sciences for young researchers. Established in 1991, it is presented annually to a single scientist under the age of 36 who has demonstrated exceptional promise and achievement. Associate Professor Wang has devoted his career to advancing geothermics, with a particular focus on heat flow and lithospheric thermal structure. His work has produced significant breakthroughs in understanding the distribution and causes of heat flow, thermal structure and magma emplacement, heat source mechanisms, and the evaluation and exploration of geothermal resources. Notably, he is the first Chinese scientist to receive this award.

The award was conferred during the ILP annual meeting, titled “45 years of Milestones in Lithosphere and Solid Earth Research with ILP.” On this occasion, Associate Professor Wang was invited to deliver an award lecture entitled “Lithospheric Thermal Structure of Continental China and Its Tectonic Implications”.
