Prof. QI Shengwen from IGGCAS has become the first recipient of the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR) Natural Science Award. The award was presented at the First World Congress of ICGdR, held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University from August 9 to 12, 2026.

The award recognizes his project, "Theory of Rock Mass Structural Dynamics and Major Engineering Applications."

QI has pioneered engineering geomechanics for extreme environments, developing a series of testing devices for use under extreme conditions and establishing the dynamics theory of rock mass structure. His research has been published in leading international journals including Nature Astronomy and Earth and Planetary Science Letters, and applied to site selection and safety evaluation for major projects in transportation, hydropower, and geological carbon dioxide storage, yielding significant economic, social, and ecological benefits.

Established in 2013, ICGdR is an international academic organization dedicated to geo-disaster reduction. The ICGdR Natural Science Award, established in 2023, honors outstanding contributions to theoretical breakthroughs, engineering practice, and disciplinary development in the field.
