On August 26, at the annual meeting of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), Researcher ZHANG Zhendong of IGGCAS was awarded the 2025 J. Clarence Karcher Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fundamental theory and applications of elastic-wave full waveform inversion.

ZHANG's research focuses on advancing the theory and methodology of waveform inversion in complex elastic media. He has developed several influential approaches, including surface-wave full-dispersion-spectrum inversion and local-correlation-based objective functions. These methods have been successfully applied to multi-scale imaging of Earth's interior, spanning engineering geology, oil and gas exploration, and crust-mantle-scale structural imaging. ZHANG has also previously been recognized with the SEG Geophysics Outstanding Reviewer Award.
