Profs. Yishuang Ai, Qi-Fu Chen, and Lian-Feng Zhao, representing a seismological delegation from IGGCAS, attended the 15th General Assembly of the Asian Seismological Commission (ASC) in Antalya, Türkiye, from November 3 to 7, 2024. Following the conference, they visited Istanbul Technical University (ITU) for academic exchange and collaborative research from November 8 to 13, 2024.
The ASC General Assembly serve as a premier platform for global researchers to exchange ideas on a wide array of seismological topics. These include seismic hazard and risk assessment, tectonics, geodynamics, insights from scientific expeditions of large earthquakes to elucidate seismogenic mechanisms, volcano seismology, remote sensing, imaging of shallow and deep earth structures, induced seismicity, advanced earthquake monitoring techniques, seismic networks, and application of artificial intelligence (AI) in seismology. At the meeting, Profs. Yishuang Ai presented on imaging of underground structures, Prof. Qi-Fu Chen discussed seismic wave propagation, and Prof. Lian-Feng Zhao delivered a talk on volcano seismology. Fig. 1 illustrated key activities from the meeting. Known as a premier tourism destination bridging Asia and Europe, Antalya provided an inspiring environment for academic exchange and collaboration during the event.
During the visit to ITU, the IGGCAS delegation received a warm welcome from Prof. Mustafa Kumral, Dean of the Faculty of Mines, Prof. Senel Ozdamar, Head of the Geological Engineering Department, Associate Prof. Tuna Eken, and other distinguished researchers. A workshop chaired by Associate Prof. Tuna Eken provided an opportunity for focused discussions. In the seminar, Prof. Lian-Feng Zhao presented on “Crustal rheology from seismic Q tomography and its implications for plateau material escapes” while Prof. Qi-Fu Chen discussed “Earthquake-volcano Interactions in China”. These presentations sparked active engagement, with participants posing questions and delving into dynamic, in-depth discussions. Both IGGCAS and ITU underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration to advance earthquake sciences and geophysical survey technologies. IGGCAS looks forward to continuing its fruitful partnership with ITU, fostering innovative research and academic synergy in seismology.
