On November 29, 2023, a delegation from the University of S?o Paulo (USP) leading by its rector, Prof. Carlos Gilberto Carlotti Junior, and composed of directors of ten institutes and departments, including the Institute of Geology and Institute of Aerography and Geophysics, visited IGG.

Participating in the event were the deputy director, Prof. Zhao Liang, and chief leader of the Technology and Science Department, Prof. Xu Chenxi, along with twenty relevant experts. The forum was chaired by Prof. Peng Peng, the president of the China–Brazil Joint Geoscience Research Center (CBRC).

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Zhao summarized the major achievements of the institute in the past ten years within Earth and planetary sciences, and further prospected possible collaborative fields between the two parties.

Prof. Carlotti congratulated the breakthroughs of IGG, and addressed the major research fields of the USP and its future ambitions, along with its plans in international cooperation. He emphasized that the purpose of his visit was to promote the cooperation of the two parties.

Prof. Xu introduced the facts and visions of IGG, focusing on research status, projects, laboratories, and cooperation. He also explained IGG’s international exchange policy.

Prof. Peng reviewed the cooperative history of the two parties, especially the history of the CBRC, and the major projects that the two parties have collaborated on. He also proposed future directions, such as geological and mineral comparison, observation of magnetic fields, and revealing the changes of the paleoclimate.

The delegates of the forum further discussed the patterns of collaboration and demands of the two parties, covering the fields of geology, tectonics, mineral resources, climates, and arts. It was also disclosed that the USP is planning to open a Brazil–China center in the USP soon, which will be multidisciplinary.

Later, the delegates visited the IGGCAS museum, TIMS lab, MC ICP-MS lab and Paleomag lab, and the two parties further discussed cooperation on platforms.

Just one month prior, on 10 October, the CBRC/IGGCAS organized the 2023 Round Table Meeting on Geoscientific Collaboration between China and Brazil, and the Annual Summit of China–Brazil Joint Geoscience Research Center. The round table meeting and annual summit are key events of the CBRC, which is an international cooperation center of the institute enrolling with about fifty active members from over ten of the two nations’ top institutions and universities.
