From May 9 to 12, 2014, the president of the Institute of Geology, State Academy of Sciences of the DPR Korea, Pak Hyonuk and three other professors visited the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences at the invitation of Academician Zhai Mingguo.  

During the visit, both sides signed a bilateral agreement and underwent discussions about new energy resources, which included shale gas, geothermal energy, and other energy resources. The delegation, accompanied by IGGCAS researchers, went to Shandong gold geological exploration Co. Ltd to discuss current exploration and processing methods. The group inspected the field geology of the associated gold belts as well as the automatic processing workshop and the rock cores. 

IGGCAS has a long history of cooperation with the Institute of Geology, State Academy of Sciences, DPR Korea, and the reciprocal visits and fieldwork together are now annual events. In the first half of this year, two researchers from the Institute of Geology, State Academy of Sciences, DPR Korea visited the IGGCAS for three months to undertake research here.
