From June 18 to July 1, IGGCAS, in collaboration with the University of Orleans, France, conducted a field practice for graduate students in the Western Alpine Orogen (French-Italian Alps). The alpine region, known as the cradle of modern geology, has been instrumental in the development of geological concepts and provides extensive research materials for geologists.

The field practice was led by academician Di Qingyun, director of the institute, who served as a special instructor. Professors M. Faure and Y. Chen from the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTO) at the University of Orleans, France, along with researchers Lin Wei, Chu Yang, and Associate Researcher Wei Wei, co-delivered the lectures. 16 graduate students specializing in structural geology, mineralogy, petrology, mineral deposit science, geochemistry, and solid geophysics participated in the practice.

The internship focused on the theme "Alpine Orogenic Belt Profile Crossing" and covered various aspects such as the composition of structural units, structural geometry, rock metamorphic-deformation characteristics, and rock types at different structural levels of the Western Alpine Orogenic Belt. The primary goal of the internship was to enhance students’ understanding of the structural framework of the Western Alpine Orogenic Belt, deepen their grasp of fundamental geological concepts and theories, and develop their field observation skills, rigorous working attitude, and logical thinking. Additionally, the internship aimed to teach students the methodologies and thought processes essential for scientific research.

Through this internship, students gained a comprehensive understanding of the history and tectonic evolution of the Alpine Orogenic Belt. They also recognized the importance of detailed field geological observations, a rigorous working attitude, and scientific logic in geological research. Participants unanimously expressed their intention to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired during this internship into their respective research fields to enhance their scientific literacy.
