The 21st International Symposium on Geo-disaster Reduction (21st ISGdR), hosted by the International Consortium on Geo-disaster Reduction (ICGdR), took place at Tongji University in Shanghai from August 6th to 8th, 2023. During the symposium, Research Professor Qi Shengwen from our institute was honored with the ICGdR Science Achievement Award for his exceptional contributions in the fields of engineering geomechanics theory, technology, and applications.

Over the past twenty years, Research Professor Qi has devoted himself to research on the engineering geomechanics of rock mass. He has developed key equipment and testing technologies for rock mass under the dynamic loading especially for seismic loading and established theory and prevention technology for predicting dynamic disasters in engineering rock masses induced by strong earthquake. The research results have been successfully applied to the site selection and construction of major national transportation, water conservancy and hydropower projects, yielding significant economic and social benefits.

ICGdR is an international academic organization in the field of geological hazards and disaster reduction, established in 2013 and headquartered in Japan. Its purpose is to promote the work of geological disaster reduction, including capacity building, education, and training, for the benefit of human society and the natural environment. The organization aims to combine international professional knowledge, coordinate the efforts of all parties in geological disaster reduction, and create an effective international organization that can serve as a partner for various projects. The ICGdR Science Achievement Award was established in 2018 and is mainly granted to individuals who have achieved outstanding achievements and made prominent contributions in basic scientific research on geological disaster prevention and reduction. One to two individuals are selected annually, and to date, it has been granted to seven scientists from China, Japan, and Italy.
